  • Whatì

Whatì (from the Dogrib language meaning "Marten Lakes"), officially the Tłı̨chǫ Community Government of Whatì is a First Nations community in the North Slave Region of the Northwest Territories, Canada. Whatì is located by Lac La Martre, about 164 km (102 mi) northwest of the territorial capital of Yellowknife.

    History

With rich and varied wildlife, the area has long been a favoured hunting ground of the Tłı̨chǫ (Dogrib Dene) Aboriginal people. The North West Company established a trading post there in 1793, and many natives began settling there permanently, while they continued to hunt and fish in the area. With the establishment of a trading post at Fort Rae on Great Slave Lake in the late 19th century, most regional trading was accomplished at the HBC and free traders posts there. A trading post at Lac La Martre was not again established until the 1920s.

On 1 January 1996, the community officially changed its name from Lac La Martre to the Tłı̨chǫ name "Wha Ti", meaning "Marten Lake," the same meaning as the French and then on 4 August 2005 to the current spelling. Other traditional Tli Cho names for the settlement include Tsoti ('fouled water lake') and Mine Go Kola ('net fishing with houses').

    What (ITS utility)

What (typed as :what in the HACTRN prompt) was a small information utility available in the Incompatible Timesharing System. It could provide information about incoming email, bus schedule on the MIT campus, executable source files or answer the user in a humorous manner.

    Implementation

:what was written in the MIDAS assembly language. It can still be used on some of the ITS instances maintained across the web. The last traceable edit of the source code was by Ken L. Harrenstien on 16 May 1988.

    Usage examples

Without arguments :what would print information about inbox status:

With the argument bus it would print out information about the next few buses leaving from the MIT campus:

Asked about source for NAME, :what responded with paths to source files corresponding to NAME:

Not knowing the answer, it would often resort to humor:

Finally, :what displayed some amount of introspection:

    What

    by: Brendan Benson

What are you trying to do to me
I closed my eyes I don't want to see
I don't want to hear about you and him
I just want to know if it's love that you're in
Coz you can't possibly be serious about him girl
And he's got to be delirious if he thinks he can win
    With a not-so-pretty face
He's come to take my place
    She's easily amused
And I know coz she fell for the same tricks
    I once used
The things you say and the things you do
I've added them up and they don't compute
I give you an inch and you take a mile
You can't say no coz it aint your style girl
And it's obvious to me that he thinks he's gonna score
But it's not the case you say you're only friends and nothing more
    But it makes perfect sense
    And I speak from experience
    She's easy to persuade
She's a piece of cake and he
    Thinks he's got her made
You said goodbye to him a long
    Long time ago
You changed your mind I guess
But you never let me know
You keep me guessing I'm always guessing wrong
    Always wrong
    With a not-so-pretty face
And a poorly thrown ceramic vase
    It makes perfect sense
    And I speak from experience
